Audition Process

WHO IS ELIGIBLE
Bowed string players (violinists, violists, cellists, or bassists), enrolled in grades 9-12 during the 2020-2021 school year, who are also members of their school orchestra programs. (Homeschooled students of appropriate age and those whose schools do not have orchestra programs are also welcome to apply!)

Students do not need to have prior fiddling experience. We are looking for musicians who are eager to learn about our creative, collaborative approach to music-making and excited to perform for a variety of audiences.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our auditions traditionally consist of three parts, each of which are held in-person. Due to COVID-19, we are adjusting our audition format but maintaining our audition expectations. For the musical parts of the audition, applicants will submit videos of their playing through a Dropbox link by Thursday, June 11th. For the conversational part of the audition, applicants will have a short chat with GTF Teaching Staff over Zoom on Saturday, June 13th.

1) A required audition tune to be learned by ear -- submitted through Dropbox.

This audition requirement helps students prepare for the way they will learn music in GTF. Click here for more information and recordings of this year's Audition Tune.

2) Musical material of the student's choice -- submitted through Dropbox.

Students should prepare no more than 4 minutes of music (in addition to the required tune). We would like to hear whatever you think best showcases your musical strengths, interests, and abilities! This might include any of the following:
- a portion of a classical piece
- a fiddle tune
- an original composition
- a song
- a medley of melodies you assemble
- an improvised solo
- something fast and something slow
- a scale
...or any combination of the above ideas! We encourage creativity in your preparation!

Scales and sight reading are not a required part of our auditions. However, if you would like to prepare a scale to show technical facility, you are welcome to do so!

Remember, choose material that best showcases your musical strengths, interests, and abilities!

3) A short chat, 5-8 minutes, with GTF Teaching Staff -- held over Zoom.

We are looking for enthusiastic, curious, community-minded musicians! Be prepared to talk briefly about your background and interests, both musical and otherwise.

Click here for the Audition Tune recordings and more information on video submission.

WHAT TO WEAR
This is an informal audition. Feel free to dress comfortably, but appropriately.

A QUICK NOTE
An essential part of the GTF experience is our annual Summer Retreat, which will be held in the valley July 17-19, 2020, pending updates regarding COVID-19. While your ability to attend retreat will not factor into our decisions, we do want to mention this ahead of time so all prospective members can plan ahead.

Tuition & Rehearsals

Tuition for the 2020-2021 season is $400 per student.

Tuition includes: rehearsal costs/expenses, instruction during rehearsals, and private workshops with guest clinicians.

Tuition does not include: uniform, travel, food, and some expenses for the GTF Summer Retreat and Winter Summit. When these expenses arise, parents will be notified in advance. In future seasons, through community donations and grants, we hope to be able to cover these expenses for our students and offer tuition scholarships.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights during the school year (September through May) from 4:30-6:30 PM at Discovery Community Church, 1644 S Lindsay Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295.
