A quick note on biographies...
Writing about yourself is hard! So, our students learn to write biographies through writing about each other. Each biography below is written by someone else in the group after an interview and multiple rounds of drafts, peer review, and revisions.

ELYSE ACKERMAN, a junior at Campo Verde High School, is an accomplished 16-year-old violist and fiddler. She's been playing viola for 7 years, currently studies with Louis Privitera, and has contributed her talent, creativity, and kindness at every GTF rehearsal since she joined the group last year. Alongside GTF, Elyse participates in the Youth Symphony of the Southwest, her school’s Symphony Orchestra and Strolling Strings program, and United Sound, which gives students with special needs the chance to play and perform music. She’s also received a letter in orchestra, which she was awarded for her participation, dedication, and hard work. When she’s not pursuing one of her many musical endeavors, you can usually find Elyse reading fantasy or dystopian fiction books, drawing, playing video games, or listening to music. Her favorite bands are the Beatles, Queen, ABBA, and Nirvana. Alongside being an exceptional violist and just an overall amazing person to be around, Elyse is also outstanding in school, where she has earned the Golden Scholar award for high grades and overall scholarship. Elyse plans to attend college and study either viola performance or music education, and there is no doubt that she will continue to excel in college and beyond.

JACOB KUPANOFF’s family excitedly welcomed him into their lives on the day of January 15, 2003. Little did they know how talented and musical he would become! To this day as a 17-year-old senior at Gilbert High School, Jacob has played the viola for seven years, four of them experimenting with fiddling. While being very accomplished with his viola, Jacob’s musical abilities don’t stop there, as he is also skilled in the cello, which he played last year in GTF, violin, and bass! This year will be Jacob’s third year in GTF, playing the viola. Outside of school orchestra, Jacob participates in the Youth Symphony of the Southwest and has diligently taken lessons from his viola teacher, Tricia Dana, for the past three years. When Jacob graduates, he plans to continue with music in college, as either a major or minor. Occasionally when he is not making music, Jacob enjoys listening to the Beatles.
When he isn’t excelling in school, Jacob participates in multiple clubs, including: Orchestra Council, Tri-M Music Honors Society, and Math Club. In past years, he has earned many awards, including participating in the Regional Orchestra for three years, receiving the Paganini award twice, and the Director’s Choice at his school. Even with all his accomplishments, Jacob Kupanoff is a talented, funny, and kind student who enjoys music, video games, his two dogs, and his friends. With the little free time he has, Jacob certainly fits in a lot of activities.
Given the choice between the mountains and the ocean, Jacob would choose the ocean every time, which makes sense, as Jacob and his family routinely take trips to the beach in California enjoying the cooler weather. While he looks forward to these trips, Jacob’s all-time favorite was the trip he took with his orchestra to New York. He loved seeing all the famous tourist attractions and even got the chance to see cellist Yo-Yo Ma! If Jacob could travel anywhere in the world, he would choose to go to Tokyo and explore the city, hopefully finding some cool video games. His favorite meal includes chicken parmesan pasta and Oregano’s pizookie for dessert. Jacob’s positive attitude and energetic personality make him the perfect addition to the Gilbert Town Fiddlers.

Along with her violin, she excels at piano, ukulele, and singing, which she started learning at 7. She recently started to fiddle, but with seven years of playing instruments, it’ll be a walk in the park. Yet, while she’s not at rehearsals, you’ll probably find her buried in a book. Grace constantly enjoys reading different genres of books along with writing her own stories. In fact, she’s so good at writing she’s even participated in the Geography Bee and gotten third place in a Father's Day writing competition! She’s been influenced by her 3rd grade teacher who constantly encouraged her to keep going book after book, by giving her pieces of literature way above her grade level. With her love for deep reading, it’s no surprise she’s also a big fan of theatre. Performing in six plays, she has brought her ability to depict her feelings to a new level. Along with theatre, Grace enjoys cooking, especially her favorite dish of salmon and risotto. And joining the Gilbert Town Fiddlers, a community of aspiring musicians who help one another reach their goals, was a perfect start.

The Gilbert Town Fiddlers are excited to welcome violinist MICHAEL RENCHER into his first year in the group! Although this is his first year with the organization, he has about seven years of classical playing and one year of fiddling already under his belt. He has been taking private lessons from our very own Taylor Morris for about two years. This sophomore is a prestigious member of the orchestra program at Red Mountain High School. His interest in music doesn’t end here; Michael also plays piano, guitar, and even sings a bit, having recently joined his school’s choir. When it comes to listening to music, he claims that his music taste is “kind of all over the place.”
When he is not fiddling around on any of his instruments, Michael enjoys playing video games, particularly an action-packed game titled Crossout, reading a good book, or sleeping in. But don’t let his relaxed demeanor fool you -- Michael is a recipient of the Eagle Scouts Award, the highest achievement for a Boy Scout; in fact, only four percent of scouts receive this award. Additionally, he is gratified by robotics, as he finds the payoff of creating something unique and functional very rewarding. He has won multiple state championships while on the Red Mountain APEX robotics team, so it is no surprise that this student is intelligent and dedicated. GTF is lucky to have someone as talented and passionate as Michael!

Sixteen-year-old VALERIA TUKA is one of Gilbert Town Fiddler’s finest. Studying under Melissa Silva, Valeria has played cello for five years and has been fiddling for just as long. She wishes she could polish her skills on her original instrument, the viola, but without a viola to practice on, that’s pretty hard to do.
Valeria is engaged in music-making wherever she goes through programs like the Chandler Symphony Orchestra’s Cheers to the Youth, where she and her peers have the opportunity to join Chandler Symphony Orchestra to experience classical repertoire, or in occasional sessions with Arizona Repertory Orchestra. As publicity co-manager of Gilbert High School’s Orchestra Council and a member of the pit orchestra, Valeria is an instrumental part of her community. She’s also revered among Gilbert High School’s Swim Team and Culinary Club.
Valeria often finds herself rocking out to some Marilyn Manson or Alice Cooper while baking or making homemade pasta, like the coolest cottage-dwelling grandma ever. When she finally gets that dream fish tank setup, her fish are going to enjoy Black Veil Brides’ metallic melodies and Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles books just as much as she does. After graduating high school, Valeria plans on attending ASU and majoring in cello performance or music therapy. GTF is honored to have her as a member of its 2020-2021 season.
